Maps & Directions
Please read the directions carefully!
There is no navigation tool capable of bringing you directly to the
pick-up location for your sailing trip!
If you have trouble finding the meeting location,
you can call Captain Doug at 707.845.1739
Whales Tale Sailing Charters is located on a mooring in the nook of Port San Luis, off Harford Pier. From Hwy 101 take Avila Beach Dr. (between Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo). Take Avila Beach Dr. to the end of the road and park at the Harford Pier parking lot.
Getting to the Parking lot
For google maps and most mapping apps enter: "Harford Pier" (in Port San Luis, san luis obispo county). This will take you to the parking lot. "Harford Pier" doesn't seem to work for all mapping apps, so if it doesn't work use this address 3975 Port San Luis Pier, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405
On summer weekends the parking lot is often full, please plan to arrive half an hour early. There is overflow parking about a 10 minute walk from the main parking lot.
ONce you have parked
Walk onto the pier. The public boat ramp and meeting area for Whales Tale Sail Charters is just past the Patriot Sport Fishing building. On the right side of the pier there is a staircase that leads down below the pier to a small floating dock. Meet here!
Things to think about
I recommend using the public restrooms (located on your right, before Fat Cats Restaurant, on your way into the parking lot) prior to trip departure. Our vessel has a bathroom but boat bathrooms are small and cramped and not the funnest when we are sailing and heeling over in good seas.
More About Our Trips
We work with the weather and conditions that old mother nature provides us so every day can be different (part of what makes it fun for our captain!) If there's heavy wind (20-25kts ++) we sail within the shadow of Point San Luis doing more of a coastal tour checking out cool historical points of interest. Our captain, a marine biologist, will spiel a bit about the ecology of the area. If conditions are 20kts or less we do a bit of the above but also spend a fair chunk of our time heading offshore looking for whales. We probably see whales up close and personal on about 60% of our trips.
IF the wind is up be prepared for authentic sailing and real boat heeling! Which is why I always recommend a good warm jacket that will repel wind and spray - both of which are somewhat common on a sailing adventure (None of that put the motor on and pretend we are sailing).
While the Central Coast Boasts some of the most beautiful weather in the United States, there are a few things we recommend you bring with you.
- A jacket and/or windbreaker and mid layer - it gets cold on the water!
- Any special snacks you'd like
- Appropriate footwear (no high heels - you are welcome to go barefoot, though)
We have a 24hr cancellation policy. If you decide to cancel your trip, you will get a full refund if you do so more than 24 hrs in advance. If you cancel within 24 hrs, you will be charged the full amount.
If we cancel due to weather you will be given a full refund.
Whales are not guaranteed. We do our best to use local knowledge and all resources available to find them, but it's a dynamic environment out there and it's important to remember we don't own or control old Mother Nature!
